Alphabet (Google, YouTube), Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), X, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and the AI labs: the stack most Indians live on.
The actor’s reach into India is assessed across eight channels, scored from 0 to 10: Trade (iPhone exports $22 bn, 5% of exports) (2.2); Energy (0.0); Capital ($14.4 bn a year pledged 2026-30, 29% of FDI equity) (5.4); Defence (0.0); Technology (OS, search, ads, cloud, payment apps, AI) (9.1); Diplomatic (digital taxes withdrawn under US pressure) (5.6); Diaspora (11% of H-1B cap) (3.3); Domestic reach (WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram reach ~half of internet users) (7.3). Its overall reach is 6.6 of 10.
38.2Significance
What 1.4 billion people see and search, which accounts are suspended or amplified, where ad money goes, and how AI assistants answer questions about India.
38.3Indicators and weights
Table 38.1 lists the 6 indicators of the arena, the weight of each within the arena, and each indicator’s reading (the Hindutva-aligned share, from 0 to 100).
The arena reads 31.0, 19.0 points below parity, and is classified as opposed majority (a reading below 45). With a weight of 2.65 of a total 107.7, it contributes 0.76 points to the composite reading of 45.7.
The indicators diverge: the highest reading is for India’s regulatory counter-leverage (IT Rules, CCI, UPI rails) (72.2), the lowest for economic exposure: IT-services exports, jobs and tax tied to Big Tech (9.9).
Each bar divides the indicator between Hindutva-aligned (left) and opposed (right) holdings. The vertical rule marks parity.
38.5Measures and exhibits
The exhibits below are the Atlas’s own views of the data behind each measure: shares by side, the largest units, breakdowns by source, recipient and country, money-flow diagrams and time series. Full row-level ledgers are in the data file (Appendix D).
